Hi, I’m Jane and have been playing 2nd then 1st trombone with the Sumner Silver Band for over 20 years.

I grew up learning to play classical flute but discovered the trombone whilst at a folk festival in UK in 1980 where I had a go on the local folk dance band’s trombone. I was instantly smitten and when back in Wellington in NZ, I bought a battered second-hand trom. I taught myself for years, playing bass lines for our barn dance band, never making much progress.

After moving to Christchurch in 1994, I joined the brass ensemble at the Cashmere High evening classes and later, the Sumner Band where kind fellow trom players gave me helpful hints. Once I retired from nursing a couple of years ago, I decided to have a few lessons which I should have done much earlier! Still learning heaps though. I also play with the 50’s Up Brass Band and in a folk group with my husband.

My other hobbies are walking, gardening, knitting, reading and hanging out with my family.
