Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market – Saturday 21st December

With the rain passing and the weather becoming decent once again the band played at the second of its farmers’ markets for the Christmas period.  These markets are very much a feature of the local landscape and very popular so it’s always a pleasure at this time of year to get out into our community to connect with local people.

Each Saturday Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market is very much a focus point for the people of the area and, as with most of the locations we are privileged to play in, is situated in a very picturesque spot with the waters of the bay just across the Causeway on one side and the hills of Mount Pleasant on the other.

In The Bleak Midwinter - duet from Kate (flugel) and Mason (Eb Bass)

Many brass bands use public playouts over the Christmas period as their major fundraising activity over the year, raising the money to help them to operate over the coming twelve months.  Sumner Silver Band has its own take on ‘passing the hat round’ – at such events we take part of an old euphonium which is used as a collecting bucket with people throwing coins into the bell.  We are constantly amazed and humbled by the donations we receive from the public at our playouts.
