Hornby Community Carols – Sunday 15th December

Like most brass bands Sumner Silver Band plays at lots of performances over the Christmas season – most of them in what we see as ‘our patch’, the local area which includes Sumner, Ferrymead and through the tunnel to Lyttelton and the bay beyond.

We ventured outside our local area this year to accompany carol singing in Wycola Park in Hei Hei.  Our solo horn player is a GP who has his surgery right next to the park and as such is very involved with the local community, so we were pleased to be able join him in supporting this interdenominational event which was an initiative from Hope Presbyterian Church, Hornby Salvation Army, St Columba’s and the Redeemer Anglican churches.

Despite the weather turning chilly after the hot period we’d had, and the wind starting to blow, the event was well supported and as well as members of the public joining together to sing Christmas carols also featured a soloist from one of the churches singing ‘O Holy Night’ and the children from Gilberthorpe School singing ‘Do You Hear What I Hear’ and ‘Jingle Bells’.
