Remembrance Sunday, Sumner - 10th November 2024

We continued a very busy November with a pop-up concert on our own patch on the Esplanade in Sumner to commemorate Remembrance Sunday.

Musical Director Victoria van Uden conducting the march Boys of the Old Brigade - a slow march that is always played in Britain at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday when the Chelsea Pensioners march.

Whilst the main day in New Zealand for commemorating and remembering those who have served the country in conflicts around the world is 25th April (Anzac Day), each year Sumner Band also pays its respects to those men and women on Remembrance Sunday, the closest Sunday to Armistice Day, 11th November.

Andrew Dee starts proceedings by playing the Last Post

Our playout commenced at 11am sharp, the time at which the ceasefire that ended the carnage of the First World War came into effect - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The first sounds were those of the Last Post, played by Andrew Dee. This was followed by a period of silent remembrance and reflection which was concluded by Reveille.

Imperial Echoes

Our programme consisted primarily of hymns and marches, including the hymn tunes Eventide (Abide With Me) (accompanied by our piper) and O Valiant Hearts plus the classic New Zealand march Invercargill.

The band and pipes play Abide With Me
