Richard Marshall in Conversation

Richard Marshall, Principal Cornet of the Black Dyke Band, a position that is heralded as the “hottest seat in banding,” led a workshop day at the home of Sumner Silver Band on Monday 14 April, providing a unique opportunity for all music enthusiasts to learn from a true maestro of global renown.

The day commenced with a workshop aimed at brass and percussion players aged under 18 where young players were encouraged to bring their instruments to put into practice the tips being shared by Richard.

After a lunch break which provided the opportunity for brass and percussion players from across the region to meet with Richard and connect with members of other bands a second workshop was held which focused on a number of areas including contest tips, general technical aspects of brass playing and a question and answer session.

At the end of the afternoon session Richard held a masterclass for all attendees, using the piece ‘Be Still’ which will be the D Grade sacred item at the forthcoming National Brass Band Contest to be held in Christchurch in July.

The day long event was hosted by Ferrymead Heritage Park, being held in the park at the Friendly Societies Lodge which our band uses as their band room.

The day was organised and sponsored by the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands Association and the Brass Band Association of New Zealand.
